Metals in Ayurveda (Bhasma) – are they safe?

A common question asked to us as Ayurveda physicians is – “Do Ayurveda medicines use heavy metals – and are they toxic”

To answer this question I thought to write a Blog to all my readers.

First of all we all have to know – “In Ayurveda, we believe that anything on earth is medicine, if used in the Right way”

So this goes well also in saying- anything used In Excess is Poison. Just like if we have lots of spicy food will result in acidity or lots of just cold foods can result in mucus.

Ayurveda medicines are usually based on

1.       Purely herbal

2.       Herbal + minerals = Herbomineral

Any Ayurveda herbs or Herbomineral are better used under guidance of an Ayurveda physician.

Just like in normal life we would use supplements like zinc, magnesium, Iron and calcium.  Ayurveda recommends many more elements including processed Gold, processed silver and other metals. When taken under proper prescription they are considered good. Bhasma in Ayurveda are finely powdered minerals and processed with proper preparations explained by the Ayurveda texts.

You have to know -

1 .herbomineral drugs which have Metals, which are prepared properly under Ayurveda guidelines are not dangerous

2 they should be always taken under Ayurveda physician.

3.       Taken no longer than 3 months -  just like herbs would be asked to take only for 3 months and take break so your body doesn’t get used to it,, similarly, herbominerals should be taken only as per your physicians – how long he has advised.

Uses -

1. Metals according to Ayurveda if given in proper dose your body absorbs it and can flush out

2. It also acts like catalyst to help fasten the body immunity process.

3. Also builds the bodily circulation.

Note – Ayurveda also uses processed Mercury, processed lead and processed sulphur too, Ayurveda doctors would use this minerals in the initial phases of the treatment and then recommend you a Rasayana treatment for a longer time. In case you are worried you should always speak to your Ayurveda doctor to understand more about your drug. That is why we recommend you to go to a professional Ayurveda physician and not some1 is who gives medicines on road side as we often see in India. Over use of any Herbomineral drug which is not recommended by your Ayurveda physician could cause metal toxicity.

Metal toxicity means your body cannot flush or absorb the excess of metals via kidneys or liver or other organs, so also it is important to take the Ayurveda medicines which are prepared by companies who comply with the rules laid down by the Ayurveda companies act.

Understanding Rheumatoid arthritis in Ayurveda

The concept of Ama has been for centuries discussed in Ayurveda. This concept of Ama is used in treatment of rheumatism. We shall try to understand initially what the word AMA means. Ama is commonly used for toxins or undigested food. According to Ayurveda, person who has a lower rate of cellular metabolism or Agni leads to collection of toxins. Usually people think if they have good metabolism at digestive tract they should be very healthy.  Ayurveda mentions about metabolism or Agni at different levels so we should more think of cellular metabolism as a whole. Agni can be understood at various levels; Jatarangi –  metabolism at Gastrointestinal tract Bhutagni –  metabolism at 5 elemental level Dhatvagni –  metabolism at 7 tissue level Considering these 13 types of Agni we could say in general as metabolism at cellular level.
