Panchakarma - a brief introduction.

Pancha-karma procedures are 5 procedures which help eliminate complex toxins from our body.

they are -

1.Vaman-Therapeutic Vomitting

2.Virechana - Therapeutic Purgation
3.Basti- Therapeutic Enemas either with Oil or Herbal Decoction
4.Nasya-Therapeutic Nasal Instillation
5.Raktamoxan- Therapeutic Blood Letting

These are 5 main procedure done as treatment of Kapha, Pitta,Vata, for Mucus , acid and Air related problems respectively.

These are specialized Treatments hence should be done under Qualified Ayurveda Doctor & Panchakarma expert.

Panchakarma can be done by both Healthy Individual as well as Diseased Person hence answer to your question on "frequency of Panchakarma procedures done" will vary, which i would like to clarify here-

For healthy individual first 3 procedures should be done once in a year to control & balance kapha, Pitta & vata respectively that too in specific time of the year.

Nasya can be done regularly & Raktamoxan as & when required.

Now, Panchakarma as a treatment for a specific disease has to be decided by competent Ayurveda Doctors & can be repeated as many no. of times according to the Disease condition, for which thorough consultation is required.

Why does this need to be done?

detox is important as it flushes and cleans the body . it also helps remove the free radicals and toxins( the bodily Aama) collected in our body since long. this toxins could get accumulated over a time and cause health issues.

Why do some patients get ghee and some patient enemas?
these detox programmes are called as panchakarma - 5 cleansing therapies.
depending on the type of dosha , health issue, etc this is advised from person to person..
it is also important to see the sthrength of the person when the detox or panchakarma is selected. we also see the time of the year, and other factors like habits etc.

can we do all panchakarmas at a time ?
is there any specific indications?

Yes, we can do all Panchakarma at a time i.e. one followed by another.
There are Purvakarma(pre procedure), Main Procedure & then Post procedure for each panchakarma treatment hence if we go by the text then each Panchakarma requires minimum 15 days to complete to 30 days to complete..

Is massage or Ayurveda massage ( abhyanaga) pachakarma?
No. it is not it is regarded as purvakarma ( lubrication technique for  the external body) , but if your doctor has given some herbs along and given mild laxatives with diet it can be used as a mild procedure for cleaning thew system with lymphatic drainage.

How important is the diet during Panchakarma days? and post panchakarma days?
It is very important, as advised by your physician, as we try to clean the cells and the meredians ( nadis or the strotasas). we dont want the heavy food or undigested food blocks the pathways and interfere with the toxins coming down to the system.
following the diet after the Panchakarma is also very important as it helps build up the good Flora.

Heard about Panchakarma and Shatkarma  are they same?
No they are not but in Ayurveda and Yoga resp, they are both used to clean the bodily toxins and improve blood flow . we put them under the word Shodhan( means to flush out)

above are some of the often questions asked to us by our patients and i have tried to put them together.

Vata - learn more about it

Vata also known as Vayu, is a combination of Air and Space Elements. why is it important to know more about Vata ? being air dominant it has features - 1. Moving - which brings lack of Grounding in the person, when it affects the mind. it makes the thoughts and actions in mind to increase, the person finds it difficult to Focus and also sit at one place. I also find people they are really not able to listen to others since their mind is making constant thoughts. Moving quality also helps the person not to go in deep sleep. How to balance  ? Practice listening to slow music - helps to calm the mind slow down your practise of yoga and hold postures longer and focus after work or meeting people come home and try to relax mulabandha or focusing on lower chakras.   2. Cold  - according to Ayurveda, this brings closure or blocking the Strotasas or Nadis , that could further affect the emotions and energy of the person. Understanding Rheumatoid arthritis in Ayurveda

The concept of Ama has been for centuries discussed in Ayurveda. This concept of Ama is used in treatment of rheumatism. We shall try to understand initially what the word AMA means. Ama is commonly used for toxins or undigested food. According to Ayurveda, person who has a lower rate of cellular metabolism or Agni leads to collection of toxins. Usually people think if they have good metabolism at digestive tract they should be very healthy.  Ayurveda mentions about metabolism or Agni at different levels so we should more think of cellular metabolism as a whole. Agni can be understood at various levels; Jatarangi –  metabolism at Gastrointestinal tract Bhutagni –  metabolism at 5 elemental level Dhatvagni –  metabolism at 7 tissue level Considering these 13 types of Agni we could say in general as metabolism at cellular level. Weakness to any of the above mentioned Agni results in Ama. Rheumatism can be more closely related to Ama-Vata mentioned in Ayurveda texts, as we find
